When I was 9 years old, I owned a dress that looked a lot like you might wear on Little House on the Prairie. I was not a big dress-wearer, but this dress felt special. It was blue with a light, tiny flower pattern and I think it had just a little bit of ruffle or fringe at the collar and hem--definitely Little House on the Prairie!
ReplyDeleteThis dress was so special to me because I wore it on stage to play ukelele with a high school symphonic band. My brothers played trombone and trumpet for the same song! We were all up there as a surprise from my dad to my mom on their anniversary. He was a band director, and arranged one of their special Hawaiian songs so that my brothers and I could play, I could sing (into a microphone!), and she could be blown away by the great surprise. It worked!!
She came up on stage crying, told my dad that he better not start singing, and I remember thinking that it was such a sweet moment. It was a very big deal for my dad to show my mom how much he cared, and for him to do it so publicly was amazing! I was so happy to watch it all happen, and thankful that I was wearing a pretty dress for such a special occasion because the truth was that I was terrified to be up on stage. I felt like no one would be listening to me sing horribly in Hawaiian if I had a good dress on!
